For decades, pop artists have been stripping down in music videos to raise eyebrows, make a statement or simply have fun without their pesky clothes getting in the way. From Miley to Blink-182 to Bowie, check out 21 artists who have memorably used the music-video platform to show some skin.

Rihanna, “Kiss It Better” (2016)

While yes, technically Rihanna remains clothed for the entirety of the “Kiss It Better” music video, there is plenty of skin-baring going on. In this black-and-white clip, RiRi is in the spotlight whether writhing on the floor or sensually posing — all while wearing sheer lingerie or a suit jacket.

Zayn Malik, “Pillowtalk” (2016)

For a song all about sex, the “Pillowtalk” video doesn’t find Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid ever baring it all, though Gigi is shown in various stages of dress. The actual nudity is only alluded to through trippy visuals of outlined bodies that punctuate the moments of the young couple making out and in each other’s arms.

Miley Cyrus, “Wrecking Ball” (2013)

Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” sported an instantly iconic music video in which the controversial pop star became way more controversial by riding naked atop a wrecking ball and tonguing a sledgehammer. The salaciousness paid off: the ballad became Cyrus’ first No. 1 single on the Hot 100 chart.

Katy Perry, “California Gurls” (2010)

What’s the point of lying down on a cotton candy cloud when you have to wear clothes? For her 2010 song of the summer champ, Katy Perry bared all while introducing fans to the magical land of “Candyfornia.”

D’Angelo, “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” (2000)

D’Angelo was an R&B star before the “Untitled” music video dropped, but the seductive, stripped-down clip inspired many more to discover his Voodoo album — and hit up the gym — when it was released in 2000. Solely featuring a buff, in-the-buff D’Angelo, the clip earned a video of the year nod at the MTV VMAs.

Blink-182, “What’s My Age Again?” (2000)

Nobody likes you when you’re 23, huh? Well, not too many people like rabble-rousers who run through crowded cities in the buff! Props to Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus for making that running jumper midway through the “What’s My Age Again?” music video, though.

Britney Spears, “Womanizer” (2008)

Within the first 10 seconds of the “Womanizer” music video, Britney Spears shows that she’s not playing around with her pop comeback when she shows off her clothes-free body in a sauna setting. Brit always knew how to make an entrance!

Rihanna, “Stay” (2012)

Rihanna has a ton of dance smashes and high-energy music videos under her belt, but for the contemplative ballad “Stay,” the pop phenom decided to keep things simple and showcase herself looking somber in a bathtub. Like “Stay,” the harrowing close-ups of Rihanna sticks with you long after the clip ends.

Gotye feat. Kimbra, “Somebody That I Used To Know” (2011)

The surprise No. 1 smash in the U.S. and eventual record of the year Grammy winner went viral in part because of its colorful (literally) music video, in which Gotye’s bare body becomes part of the geometric pattern behind him. Eventually joining the Australian singer is Kimbra, who also shed her clothes for the clip.

P!nk, “So What” (2008)

P!nk’s IDGAF anthem about embracing her rock-star life after losing her husband (played by real-life husband Carey Hart) wouldn’t have been complete without the music video sequence in which she proudly, nakedly presents herself on a red carpet. She even does a little bit of the “Thriller” dance for good measure!

Jennifer Lopez, “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” (2001)

After ditching her various golden trinkets in an effort to prove that love, indeed, does not cost a thing, J.Lo finally rips off her white top and tosses the shirt at the camera as the video ends.

Alanis Morissette, “Thank U” (1998)

For the highly anticipated follow-up to her blockbuster Jagged Little Pill album, Alanis Morissette re-introduced herself as a pop troubadour who didn’t mind singing on a city street or (ick) riding the subway while nude. The “Thank U” clip was widely derided, but remains one of her most memorable visual statements to date.

Michael Jackson, “You Are Not Alone” (1995)

Need to definitively prove that your highly publicized marriage is not a sham? Appear with your wife, without clothes, in a music video, of course! That’s what Michael Jackson did with then-spouse Lisa Marie Presley in the impossibly awkward clip for “You Are Not Alone,” in which the King of Pop became the King of Naked Cuddling.

Lady Gaga, “Marry The Night” (2011)

The epic music video for Lady Gaga’s “Marry The Night” includes one sequence in which the pop star trashes an apartment, showers herself with Cheerios and thrashes in a bathtub without a top in sight. It’s hardly the first time Gaga stripped down in a music video: she also posed without clothes in the clips for “Bad Romance” and “LoveGame.”

Erykah Badu, “Window Seat” (2010)

Erykah Badu made a pretty heavy statement by filming her “Window Seat” video at the site of John F. Kennedy’s assassination — the video ends with the R&B chanteuse on the sidewalk, blue blood streaming out of her head — but she shocked fans even more by removing her clothes in the one-shot video, prior to the faux killing.

Matt and Kim, “Lessons Learned” (2009)

If “Daylight” served as indie-pop duo Matt and Kim’s breakout single, “Lessons Learned” — in which the couple parades around New York’s Times Square in the buff — was the pivotal clip in helping the band reach a wider audience. The Naked Cowboy has nothing on these guys, who garnered hundreds of wary looks in less than four minutes.

Madonna, “Erotica” (1992)

The uncensored version of Madonna’s “Erotica” video finds the Queen of Pop, Vanilla Ice, Isabella Rossellini, Big Daddy Kane and others getting artfully freaky in conjunction with Madge’s controversial coffee-table book, Sex. Although the version was banned on MTV, it has found new life on YouTube.

Eminem, “Superman” (2002)

Eminem, up to his old frat-boy shenanigans, shows his bare butt in the “Superman” clip, when his lady friend asks to rejoin him after a one-night stand and is met with a full moon. The woman is played by porn star Gina Lynn, who exposes her breasts less than a minute later in the clip.

David Bowie, “China Girl” (1983)

If you’re searching for an insanely dated, impossibly dramatic music video, look no further than David Bowie’s wacky clip for “China Girl,” in which the rock auteur appears with nothing but a smile as he and his beloved make out on a beach at sunrise.

Maroon 5, “Animals” (2014)

Another Top 10 hit for Maroon 5, “Animals” raised some eyebrows for its flesh-toting music video, in which creepy butcher Adam Levine gets in touch with his inner meathead, hunts down his woman-prey and bares all as they are covered in blood. A truly unsettling example of a pop star baring all.

Kelly Rowland, “Down For Whatever” (2011)

The former Destiny’s Child singer shows off her immaculate physique in the “Down For Whatever” music video, letting refracted light cover up her naughty bits while posing on a platform and wearing nothing but high heels. “Down For Whatever” was the follow-up to the equally sexual hit “Motivation,” featuring Lil Wayne.

Jem, “They” (2004)

The Welsh artist Jem’s music video for “They” features the rare nudity-in-space angle, as the singer is the source of a teenage boy’s fantasy and begins stripping in zero gravity. Feel free to insert a “full moon” joke here!
